Volunteer Opportunities

We are currently looking to fill the following positions:

- Trunk or Treat Volunteers
- Welcome Desk Volunteers
- Gifts for Kids Volunteers

Trunk or Treat Needs Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers to help with "Trunk or Treat" a big family event that gathers around 350 children each year. Location: St. George's School on Saturday, October 19th from 3 - 5 pm.

The committee members will help out with: planning the event, organizing members to participate with their cars, buying candy (paid for by the AWCL), general setting up on the day as well as running the event itself.

It's always a lot of fun for the children and we need your help to make this year's event another big success!
Would you like free admission?! We are looking for volunteers! We need about 40 cars with their trunks (boots) decorated, so that the children can walk around to receive candies (candy will be provided by AWCL; the decorating is up to you). As a way to say "thank you", each vehicle volunteered will be given one free child's admission to the event! We will also have student volunteers to stay with the cars, so you can have a break and take your children trick-or-treating.
If you would like to volunteer or need more information, please contact Emily Peters at  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Gifts for Kids

Since 1996, The American Women’s Club of Luxembourg (AWCL) has been organizing and leading Gifts for Kids, a volunteer-run, community-driven charitable initiative to bring St. Nicholas Day presents to children living in Luxembourg foyers. For each of the last three years, the AWCL has averaged approximately 800 presents being delivered to children for the holiday.

Companies, schools and organizations throughout Luxembourg, called sponsors, set up Christmas trees in prominent locations upon which paper ornaments, handcrafted by the volunteers at AWCL, are hung.  Each ornament reflects the gift wish of a child who has chosen a favorite present from the holiday catalog of Cactus Belle Etoile, a longtime partner of Gifts for Kids. Any individual who would like to fulfill a gift wish removes the ornament and does not buy the actual present but simply provides the funds for the purchase. The AWCL arranges the buying of the presents and, a few days before St. Nicholas Day, December 6th, delivers the presents to the foyers.

Gifts for Kids’ trees will start appearing in the community at the beginning of November and will continue into December. Anyone wishing to make the holidays a bit brighter for a child is encouraged to take an ornament.

How Can I Help? Grant the Wish of a Child!

AWCL reaches out to Luxembourg foyers and asks each child to select a present that they would like for St. Nicholas Day from the holiday catalog of our longtime partner Cactus Belle Etoile. These presents, up to 25 EUR, are funded by individuals in the community. If you see a “giving tree” at a sponsor location, we encourage you to take an ornament and grant a wish for a child this St. Nicholas Day. If you prefer, you may send a donation to:

This bank account is solely used for Gifts for Kids. All of the accumulated funds are taken to buy the presents for the children each St. Nicholas Day. Any money sent in as a donation is used to purchase a present. All facets of the project are performed by volunteers at AWCL. Any administrative costs or supplies are either donated or covered through an AWCL Board approved donation each year from the AWCL to Gifts for Kids.

Become a Sponsor: Display a Giving Tree

There is no financial obligation to being a sponsor. Corporations, schools and organizations work with the AWCL to promote Gifts for Kids to their employees, colleagues and visitors, encouraging them to make donations if they choose. Sponsor involvement only lasts for the months of November and December.

A display is made in the lobby of a sponsor location, usually a Christmas tree, on which hand-crafted ornaments (made by the volunteers at AWCL) are hung, each reflecting a gift chosen by a child. Posters giving an overview of the project, written in both English and French are provided by AWCL and can also be placed near the display. Email templates, also in English and French, can be provided to sponsors should they wish to share those with employees and colleagues.

Becoming a sponsor is simple:

  • Identify a contact person and provide their details to AWCL
  • Inform AWCL if you require a tree for displaying ornaments
  • Display ornaments at your location in a well trafficked area during November and December (ornaments provided by AWCL)
  • Hang explanatory overview posters near the display (in French and English, provided by AWCL)
  • Encourage colleagues, visitors and/or clients to participate
  • Send employees the project overview via email (in French and English, provided by AWCL)
