FAWCO

The American Women’s Club of Luxembourg is a member of FAWCO.

FAWCO is a valuable resource for members: everything from US citizenship issues, tax and banking to voting overseas. You can register on the FAWCO website for free and subscribe to their newsletters.

FAWCO offers a series of free information web seminars to inform Americans overseas how to be tax compliant. All you need to do is register through their Club Workshops page. There is also information about voting with FAWCO-OVF (Overseas Vote Foundation).


Are you a quilter?

Every year since 1995, FAWCO members throughout the world have contributed their creativity and sewing talents to the FAWCO Friendship Quilt.

This international collaboration has resulted in a unique collection of stunning handmade quilts. The greatly coveted finished product is raffled each year at the FAWCO annual conference in order to raise money for The Foundation's programs and charitable causes.

What is FAWCO?

FAWCO is an international federation of independent organizations whose mission is

  • to build strong support networks for its American and international membership;

  • to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide;

  • to advocate for the rights of U.S. citizens overseas; and

  • to mobilize the skills of its membership in support of global initiatives for education, the environment, health and human rights.

Founded in 1931, FAWCO is a global women’s NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), an international network of independent volunteer clubs and associations comprising 65 member clubs in 35 countries worldwide, with a total membership of around 12,000. FAWCO serves as a resource and a voice for its members; seeks to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide, especially in the areas of human rights, health, education and the environment; advocates for the rights of U.S. citizens overseas;  contributes to the global community through its Task Forces and The FAWCO Foundation, which provides development grants and education awards. Since 1997, FAWCO has held special consultative status to the UN Economic and Social Council.

 

The FAWCO Foundation

Founded in 1967, The FAWCO Foundation's mission is to put into action the interests of FAWCO in the global community by specifically aiding charitable, scientific and educational programs, and by supporting the rights of women and children throughout the world. FAWCO’s philanthropic "heart" is supported by the generous and caring spirit of our members.

The Foundation has restructured the Development Grants (DGs) to align them with FAWCO’s four areas of focus: Health, Education, Human Rights and Environment. There are currently Development Grants under each area of focus.

The FAWCO Foundation is the philanthropic arm of FAWCO. Each spring, this amazing organization awards eight education awards plus six development Grants.

About Us

The American Women’s Club of Luxembourg (AWCL) is a non-profit, volunteer-run group serving women in Luxembourg and the surrounding region. It’s a registered Social Club as required by A.S.B.L laws (Associations Sans But Lucrative: non-profit organizations).

Our name is somewhat misleading as the majority of our members are actually not American - 60% come from almost 40 other countries around the world. We celebrate this diversity as each member brings to the Club unique experiences and a culturally rich background that we all benefit from.

The AWCL formed in 1959 as a small, informal gathering. Today, we have hundreds of members from all around the world, including newcomers and ladies who have called Luxembourg home for many years now.

The American Women’s Club of Luxembourg is a member of FAWCO, the Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas.

On behalf of the American Women’s Club of Luxembourg (AWCL), I extend to you a warm welcome to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Since 1959, the AWCL, a non-profit, volunteer run organization, has helped to assist newcomers as they become situated in Luxembourg and the surrounding region. We celebrate the diversity of our approximately 300 AWCL members from 40 different countries, with English being our common language. Our goal is to provide opportunities for women to meet new friends, become involved in the community and enjoy their time in Luxembourg.

We are as strong as the women who make up our group, and we have amazing women with impressive careers, educational backgrounds, interests and skills who lend us their talents to start various classes and activities. We offer weekly French lessons at two different levels, French conversation groups, Luxembourgish practice sessions, hiking, city walks, cinema movie going, handcrafts, monthly travel talks, day trips and book clubs, and special events each month, like wine tastings and dinners. We are always open to new ideas, so if you have something that you would like to initiate, we would love to hear about it.

Communication is the key to keeping our members connected. At the start of every month, our online newsletter, the E-Vine, is distributed to members, detailing special events that month, charitable causes and community initiatives with which we are involved, information sessions that we offer on various aspects of Luxembourg living, and ongoing activities and classes that meet regularly. The closed Facebook page allows members to reach out to each other, ask questions or advice of other members and to receive real time updates/reminders on events. The Facebook page provides a forum for new members to get ideas and suggestions that make the assimilation into everyday life that much easier.

We are quite fortunate to have a Clubhouse, especially one that is centrally located near Parc Merl, and we use it constantly for social events and activities, making it a hub of energy and a wonderful place to meet friends and make new ones. Just about every day that it is open, a member will find something organized to join in, and there is always a volunteer at the Welcome Desk during Club hours. Our Clubhouse is a place that every member should feel comfortable stopping by, whether she is there for a planned activity or just to have a cup of coffee and socialize. As long as the door is open, come in and feel at home.

If you have not yet attended a monthly Welcome Coffee, please do come to at least one. Members, both new and longtime, as well as prospective members, introduce themselves and have a chance to meet, and you can learn about ways to participate. There are always plenty of activities to choose from, so it is up to you how involved you would like to be.

The American Women’s Club of Luxembourg was founded in 1959. Its mission is to foster and encourage social, educational, cultural and philanthropic activities among its members in Luxembourg and to assist in furthering American-Luxembourg relations.

At the AWCL, we take the protection of your privacy and personal information very seriously. In compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we would like to inform you of the privacy statement for the AWCL.

Privacy Statement: 

The American Women's Club of Luxembourg (AWCL) has always been strongly committed to protecting the privacy of our members and securing the personal data that we maintain on our members. As a highly valued member of the AWCL, and in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we want to assure you that your personal information is not shared external to our organization. It is also not published in a hard copy directory for distribution within the Club. Information that you provided upon joining, and may have updated since that time, is maintained on a database that is password protected and accessible by the Director of Membership. That password is not shared. Information is maintained on the database for the full duration of an individual's membership, and it is not used to make automated decisions. Personal data provided may include name, address, telephone number and email and is used for internal Club communication, primarily to send out our monthly newsletter and for emails providing updates on Club activities.

Our Facebook page is closed and only current members are granted access. Access requests from individuals external to the AWCL are never granted. Facebook has its own privacy policy and use of our Facebook page is subject to that policy.

You always have a right to know how your information is being used, to update your information, or withdraw any information. These requests should be submitted to the Director of Membership.

PresidentMeryl Kearns

Meryl is the chief representative of the Club and oversees the running of the Club. She represents the AWCL in the community.

Vice President: Midge Crist

Midge is responsible for Clubhouse maintenance and the renter. She also keeps the Clubhouse calendar for all activities requiring reserved time and space at the Clubhouse.

 

 

 

 

 


Events Directors: Leslie Pierce, Rosanna Doimo

Leslie and Rosanna are responsible for special events which include the monthly meetings and any Club sponsored special events which support Club interests. They organize the TGIF and Ladies’ Night Out activities, Trunk or Treat, Easter Egg Hunt, as well as numerous other get-togethers throughout the year.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Communications Director: Jade Greene

Jade oversees internal Club communications, which include the E-Vine (our monthly electronic newsletter), the members only AWCL Facebook page, our website, and advertising.

 

 

 

 

 

Membership Director: Liz Dardar Bryant

Liz keeps an accurate record of members. She processes application forms for new and renewing members. She also oversees the Welcome Committee.

 

 

 

 

 

Treasurer: Robin Spivak

Robin prepares our annual budget and maintains financial records and accounts. She provides financial management data to the Board throughout the Club year.

 

Secretary: Alexandra Gregori

Alex maintains the Club’s records, including meeting minutes. She also handles all official Club correspondence.

 

 


Directors of Charitable Services/FAWCO RepresentativesMary-Rose and Joanne shall coordinate all business connected with the Club’s membership in the Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas (FAWCO). They are responsible for all charitable services and FAWCO activities.

 

 

Parliamentarian: Liz Hanly

Our Parliamentarian, Liz, will advise the Club on Parliamentary matters, conduct the election of officers, and handle any amendments to the Constitution and Standing Rules.

 

Clubhouse Manager: open position

The Clubhouse Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Clubhouse. She trains and schedules volunteers for the Welcome Desk.
