American Women's Club of Luxembourg

AWCL ACTIVITY DESCRIPTIONS

The American Women's Club of Luxembourg offers a host of activities for its members. They are a great way to meet new people and explore new interests!

Don't see your particular fancy? What's YOUR passion or hobby? Cooking, gardening, travel, quilting, visiting museums?
If you don't see what fits your interest then - feel free to start an activity of your own!
You are then free to organize it around your own schedule and meet as often or infrequently as you wish.

We do have some activities where we are hoping to find a new leader - take on the challenge and volunteer!

For more information, see below or contact the AWCL Clubhouse
(Tel: 44 84 77 or email:
awcluxembourg@vol.lu).

Detailed information about meeting places, times and contact persons is published in the Members only section of our website (username and password provided upon membership payment and available on the inside cover of the directory) or in the monthly Grapevine newsletter, which is distributed free to AWCL members and by subscription to non-members.

Note that you must be a paid member of the AWCL to participate in one of these activities.

 A Taste of the World

 Book Club

The Book Club meets once a month usually on the last Wednesday at the AWCL clubhouse from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The AWCL Book Club was formed in the 1996-97 club year.
Each month we choose one book for discussion, which is announced in advance in
The Grapevine.

The book discussions are attended by ten to fifteen members each month.
All AWCL members are welcome to attend.

 Bridge Club

In 2006-7 the AWCL organized two social Bridge Groups based on level of experience,
Bridge Group I which was the Beginner-Intermediate players who met Mondays from 9:30 until 12:30.

Bridge Group II was for the Intermediate-Advanced players and met Tuesday afternoons.
Both groups used a rotating hostess schedule.

Each hostess decided whether to begin with a light lunch or just play and serve coffee and dessert mid-way.

We are seeking new leaders for one or both groups - would you be interested?
You may organize the meetings according to your schedule.

 Cafe Francais

Are you taking French lessons? Would you like to put into practice what you've been learning in class?
Join us each month as we enjoy a cup of coffee and are guided in conversation by a native French speaker.
This is not a group lesson but a fun and informal get together to practice your French.

Cinema Sisters

This is a group for movie buffs! We meet once a month to enjoy new or old films and then have a short discussion afterwards.
Do you like to see a film 'with the girls'?  Join us!
Note:  currently seeking a co-chairperson to lead this group for once a month meetings.

 Craft Club

Visit Anneke de Voogd to learn how to make those special gifts and decorations.
Whether it be Valentines or graduation, Anneke can help you with your craft ideas.

Day Trips

Fantastic fun with fantastic ladies!  Previous day trips have included visiting an abbaye in Belgium and Idar-Oberstein in Germany.
Generally the trips are from 9am to 5pm although sometimes the return home is earlier.
Watch the GV or the Members Only section of the website for upcoming outings!

 Gourmet Club

Calling all gourmet cooks or wannabees!  Do you dream of having that perfect dinner party, yet never know what to make?
Would you like to whip up creative and unusual dishes?  Well then, the gourmet club is for you!
Groups of four to six people meet each month at alternating homes to sample and experiment with various recipes and menus.
We will prepare the meal together and sit down to enjoy the fruits of our labor!

 Hiking Club

The Hiking Club takes advantage of the wonderful rambling routes in the Luxembourg countryside.
The hikes are done on Friday mornings and generally take between one and a half to two hours.
All hikes are pre-walked by the hiking team, so we can answer any question on all routes. Just call!

The pace is brisk! You will need to bring water and perhaps a snack. Dogs are welcome on a leash,
but the hikes are not suitable for strollers or pushcarts.
You can carpool with other hikers to the designated meeting spots, if desired.

Often following the hike, there is an optional coffee or lunch.
It is a good idea to bring an extra pair of shoes and a warm sweater for afterwards, as inclement weather is part of the adventure of living here.

So, for friendship, fresh air, exercise, beautiful scenery and an opportunity to get to know the real Luxembourg,
join us in all types of weather on Friday mornings.

 Moms and Tots

Moms and Tots would like to welcome all members with babies, toddlers and small (or not so small) children to join us.
All year round we socialize, exchange information and keep both ourselves and our little ones happy and active by hosting different events.
This very active group can be a lifesaver for you when you move to Luxembourg with small children not yet in school!
Come join us at one of our play dates, outings, activities, "Mom's Night Out" or other adventures!

 Night Owls

The Night Owls is a social group that has met in the past for one evening each month for dinner and other activities,
both cultural and otherwise. If you have a job during the day or are otherwise too busy to participate in the day groups,
the Night Owls is a great opportunity to meet friends, relax and socialize.
We  are looking for a new leader for this group!

 Ramblers

The Ramblers is a group which hikes approximately 14-16 km in the beautiful green north of Luxembourg once a month.
Meeting place is usually the Heisdorf car park at 9:15.

Do you have a shoebox full of vacation pictures, pictures from the last birthday party or summer visitors to Luxembourg?
The Scrapbooking Club is a friendly group who work on getting all those pictures in a photo album or scrapbook.
We meet once a month at the clubhouse to share ideas and crop the pictures into our albums.
It is a relaxing and stress free environment where creative ideas are bounced around.
Because of limited working space, we can have only eight people working at a time; so reservations are essential.

Tempting Tastebuds

Love to try restaurants for a reasonable price and no babysitting cost?
Join the Tempting Tastebuds as we try different cuisine around the Luxembourg area on a bi-monthly basis.
We've been to Thai, Moroccan, Spanish and Greek restaurants, all with much fun and eating pleasure.

Tennis Club

Haven't played tennis since high school or college?  Don't worry!  Most of us started out that way and it's amazing how you do improve once you start playing again!  Complete beginner? or...Pretty good player?  No problem!
The Tennis Club is a great way to get out and have a fun game of tennis while meeting some new people
(the exercise doesn't do any harm either).

We book our indoor courts for every Thursday morning at the Kockelscheuer Sports Center located just outside Luxembourg City.
Cost averages a very reasonable EUR 120 per person for the whole season,
which begins the first week of October and continues through May and sometimes June.

We play doubles and/or singles, have players of all levels and have even arranged lessons for beginner groups.
So, don't hesitate to ask for more information!

Sign-up for the Tennis Club takes place at the September or October (latest) Brunch Meeting.
We do ask for a commitment for the season, as we pay the courts in advance in October,
but it is possible to join later in the year if space is available.
If you can't make it once in awhile it is no problem as long as you let someone know in advance.
If you cannot commit to play every week, then you may sign up as a substitute or alternate with another member.
Hope you will join this terrific group!

 Wine Club

Wine for the Fun of It!
Please join our group as we taste our way through various wine regions, countries, and varietals.
From absolute beginner to wine expert, you are sure to have fun, meet new people, and learn something new at our
Wine Club events.
Most events will be held on weeknights.
All events are open to AWCL members and their "significant others", so bring along your better half!

Some events will be focused on wine, some will be focused on wine with food.
WINE TASTING glass sizes will be observed.
Check the Members only section of the website for details on the next activity!

Writers' Workshop

We've talked about writing literature for children and shared work in progress.
In April we completed a writing exercise that produced prose poems,
and in May there was talk of marketing our writing. Newcomers are welcome.

Happy writing!
