Here are a few insider tips on discounts we have discovered over time while here in Luxembourg. Many of them are not publicized - or not publicized very well - so we have stumbled upon them by chance.
Automatic Car
Wash: Autocentre
Goedert (next to Hornbach), Bertrange:
on Sundays, get your car washed for half-price. Open Sundays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm (more
or less!).
NEW!
BPM solves the problem for the
consumer residing in
Cartes de
Fidelite: many stores and service providers (e.g., hair salons) offer "loyal
customer cards" whereby you receive discounts after having made a certain
amount of purchases with them. In most
cases, you hand your card to the cashier at the time you make your purchase,
and he or she records the purchase in their system or directly on your
card. Some of the stores that offer
them are Auchan, Cactus, Cora and Delhaize, but there are many more. Go to the store's information desk to ask
for your card.
Children's Haircuts: Bambini's, City Concorde, 80 route de Longwy, Bertrange (tel: 45 04 24). Get six haircuts and the seventh is
half-price. Bambini’s is a
child-friendly hair salon designed just for kids, with special seats, toys
& cartoons to keep them sufficiently amused during the haircut. Although most of the staff members do not
speak English, they are very friendly and understanding if there is a language
gap. They also are well experienced in
cutting quickly on fidgety and restless little heads. After each cut, they give you a card stamped with the date of
your visit. After you have collected
six cards, present them on your seventh visit for the discount. If they forget to offer you the card, just
ask.
On-line
Shopping with Amazon: the Amazon
website in Germany (www.amazon.de) is the only one that
offers free shipping to Luxembourg with purchases of at least €20. You can find many English-language books,
CDs, DVDs and videos on that site.
Although the prices may be slightly higher than what you pay in the US,
the cost of shipping is less (or free), and in most cases, you avoid paying the
high customs duty because you are purchasing within the EU (Luxembourg customs
is usually 30% of the value of goods assessed at US $50 or more). If you can't find
what you're looking for on Amazon.de, try the sites in France (www.amazon.fr) and the UK (www.amazon.co.uk). Although they do not offer free shipping to Luxembourg, you can
still take advantage of lower shipping costs than if you buy from the US and
the waiver of most customs duties
Parking in
Trier, Germany: if you like
shopping in the Trier pedestrian zone, you can get a 50% discount on parking in
the Kaufhof garage if you make a purchase at the department store of at least
€5.00. When you make your purchase,
hand your parking ticket to the sales clerk and he or she will punch it. When you put the card in the automat to pay,
it will automatically reduce your fee. Finding the Kaufhof garage is easy: take the autoroute A1/E44, Exit # 3 (first
exit for Trier); at the end of the exit ramp, turn right and follow the winding
road into town; at the first light, turn
left toward Centrum crossing the bridge; at the end of the bridge, turn right onto Martinsufer; turn
left at the first light and follow signs for the Kaufhof parking garage.
