Luxembourg is a gourmand’s delight and,
considering its small size, boasts a number of restaurants with Michelin stars. For a full listing consult the Michelin Red Guide Benelux.
Remember that dining hours can be
fairly rigid. At many restaurants
lunch is served between 12:00p.m. and 2:00 p.m. and dinner service may not
begin until 7:00 p.m. Most
restaurants are closed between 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Although hours are becoming more relaxed,
many kitchens close around 11:00 p.m.
In Luxembourg and most of Europe, the
fee for service and taxes at restaurants, bars and cafes are built in to the
price of the individual items on the menu.
So when you pay your bill, you are also paying a service charge
(fifteen percent in Luxembourg) and an additional tip is not obligatory. If service has been good, it is customary
to leave a small tip, no more than €2.00 to €3.00. If you are a regular customer, a slightly larger tip may ensure
continued good service.
In most restaurants, your waiter will
not rush you to finish. In accordance with this leisurely custom, you must
ask for the bill. To ask for your bill in French, say " L'addition, s'il vous plait.'
Ice cubes are seldom served in drinks.
To request ice, ask for ‘glaçons”. Restaurants and cafés may not have ice available.
If you are dying for a hamburger and
order filet Américain, chances are you will be served a beautifully garnished,
raw ground beef patty.
